10 Ways to Feel More Powerful in 10mins.

  1. Wake up earlier – This is probably the hardest thing for anyone to do. Few days ago, I fell asleep with my cousin, when my alarm went off the next morning, I jolted out of bed an quickly stopped the alarm, she was totally shocked by this. “Why do you jump up like that?”, she had asked. If you are anything like me, “a 5 minutes snooze” usually turns into an hour. No lie though, waking up as soon as my alarm goes off makes me feel in charge of my day; I’d admit we all know it is difficult, but to deal with grogginess in the morning and to be in bed on time with all the digital distractions, makes me feel like I am using my time (and life) very well.
  2. Meditate – Doesn’t sound like a whole lot of fun, but biologically, meditation can help your body release the “feel good” chemicals that calms you down and help you feel more in control of your body.
  3. Write things down – I have a friend who purchases all sorts of Journals, of different colors and positive quotes, just because they make her feel good. She does try to write in them from time to time, but I think just the idea of owning journals and diaries make her feel very powerful, in control of life. I can say the same for myself, (in fact, we went journal shopping together once.) Writing things down helps me better organize my thoughts, re-hydrate ideas, keep things organized, and free my mind, hence – making me feel more powerful.
  4. Sing out loud– There is something about singing loudly and fiercely that screams – “in control”. Did you know that singing is aerobic, it increases the oxygenation of the blood, which also improves overall alertness. So, whether you’re a shower singer, professional diva or take part in a choir, all types of singing will bring benefits to your brain.
  5. Write a gratitude letter or texts – This made no sense to me at first, but it is research-proven, I promise. Our brain is a very beautifully complex organ. Researches have shown that writing a letter or sending a text of gratitude to others have it’s health benefits, not only for the recipients, but also the writer. Individuals who regularly express their gratitude, or engage in other gratitude exercises, exhibit increased satisfaction with relationships. Being grateful to other people for things or even just for their presence in your life, helps you view life less materialistically, therefore, you suffer less envy, hence – feeling powerful. Sounds like a reach, but give this a try and share results *wink*
  6. Wear red lipsticks – I love love love this one! It explains itself.
  7. Work on your posture – Strut it, girl. Walk with your head high up on your shoulders.
  8. Watch TED talks – During our quiet time, and when we are not watching wedding videos on YouTube and crying, myself and some of my friends take time to watch educative and empowering videos. TED Talks shares the best ideas from the TED Conference with the world, for free: trusted voices and convention-breaking mavericks, icons and geniuses share ideas, innovations, and ground-breaking research. These talks are very empowering and motivational.
  9. Learn a new skill – Nothing screams POWERFUL as much as a person who is skilled in different areas, multi-talented, Jack-of-all-trades.
  10. Exercise – Feeling like you are in control of your body, the way you look, the way you feel is the ultimate power that we can wish for. So, exercise, keep yourself looking good and healthy. Health is wealth.
